Object element and browsers

Time for the annual update of my site (which after the previous update
is pretty much all HTML 4.01 Strict styled with CSS). Mostly text, with
a very few photos presented via img elements, dating from the days when
I was limited to dialup modem.

Where appropriate, I would like to add some movies (probably H.264, with
fallbacks to a jpg), and some audio interviews (mp3). However I notice a
lot of sites seem to be using embed, rather than object.

Does this mean  there still some major problem with using the object
element? My quick initial tests seemed to show Safari, Firefox and Opera
all supported object.

My Google search seemed to indicate that IE7 now had reasonable object

Both are wrong approaches in most cases. Use links.
