Mirroring data in an HTTP request/response pair

I have a custom server that accepts HTTP POST requests and returns a
response as the POST reply.  Multiple POSTs may be outstanding at any
given time.  I have a client that will be sending requests to it, but
needs some way to match each response with its original request.

I wanted to add an HTTP header or form element to the request that
contains a request identifier, that the server would copy into the
response.  But I haven't been able to discover any header or form
element that is mirrored from the request to the response.  I suppose
that this is because what I'm doing is beyond the original intent of
HTTP.  Anyway, I wanted to find out if there is a standard way of doing
this before I create my own method.  Thanks.

As I understand your question, any session mecanism would do that using
cookies or url parameters
