Hi All,
Our web application is trying to provide a link to a .tgz file and
provide an option to download the file by clicking the link. when we
click on the link,
I write the file content in ServletOutputStream, set the content type
to "application/octet-stream" and the "Content-Disposition" to
"attachment; filename=\" support.tgz \" ".
mozilla and IE7 show the save as or open buttons, when we select the
save button, they throw the save as window with the expected file name
and extension which is support.tgz. where as in IE6, it is saying the
file type as "un known type" and file name is also changed to url
Can any one please help me to solve this.
Any thought is welcome.

Just a SWAG, but why not change the filename to not have spaces?  I
thought the syntax was

not what you posted.

Maybe you can use "application/x-gzip". I want to mention too that complete http
header should be

Content-Type: application/octet-stream
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: ***
Content-Disposition: filename="***"

where *** must be replaced with appropriate values.

I think providing a application/oxtet-stream mime type is a really bad
thing to do.

Have a look at this Microsoft document :
"How To Raise a "File Download" Dialog Box for a Known MIME Type"
