    How do they make those interactive HTML tutorials? I mean the
ones where you can type your own HTML code in a text box, click a
button and see your code displayed on the screen. Do they just put
whatever you typed into a new page, or is there more to it? Are there
security vulverabilities? Enquiring minds want to know!

It's most likely a document write... heres a simple one...

If you're talking about W3schools, it's server side (ASP classic) and
frames.  The user submits the markup in one frame, then the server spits
the output to the other frame.
