Does anyone know of a freeware tool that will generate thumbnails from
I'm imagining something that you can supply with the name of a directory
containing full-sized pictures and the name of a directory where the
thumbnails are put. It should be possible to specify the size of the
desired thumbnails (or perhaps specify one size for portrait and a
different size for landscape).
It would be even better if you could specify a name pattern of the
thumbnail file in case you want to put them in the same directory as the
full-sized pictures. For example, original pictures might be dogs001.jpg,
dogs002.jpg, etc., which means that the name pattern of the originals is
dogsnnn.jpg. You might want to insert a 'thumb' in the filename for the
thumbnails, e.g. dogs001.thumb.jpg. That would make the output pattern

I could do the thumbnails manually with existing tools but I'd like to
"work smarter, not harder"....

cd $PICS || exit 1
mogrify -format gif -thumbnail 64x64 -path $THUMBS '*.jpg'
Untested, but cribbed from docs. Requires ImageMagick (free).
