Hello to everyone...
I'was wondering if it is possible to reinstall on my new sony vaio, which
has come with a lot of preinstalled garbage, a clean windows XP by the
original recovery DVD without having automatically set up all those dozens
of useless bundled software in 30 days trial...
TIA

No. The point of an OEM restore disk is to restore the unit to the
condition it left the factory in. However, your Sony may have come with
some application and program disks. You would use those to reinstall some
of the software that came on your machine when you purchased it. Some of
this software may not be installed during the restore process.

First, have you burned the set of recovery CDs? Many of these have
separate OS and application installation CD sets. Second, have you
visited Sony support for your model? There are instructions for many
models for doing a clean install.

Thank you, firstly, for your help

yes, as soon as I get off the notebook out of the package and switched on, I
burned the couple of recovery dvds.
the first one allows only to reinstall bundled software, including those
trial versions.
the second one performs a complete and automate reinstall of the OS with ALL
those crappies bundled, just allowing more a resize of partitions w/o
deletion of the hidden one which, afaik, is used as source for recovery
files.
thereafter, since I was suspecting that removing each program one by one
would have took more time than a format&reinstall, i suddenly started a
destructive repartitioning and xp reinstall which, once over, brought me the
same machine I left, excepting for the volume size !!!!

Second, have you

Maybe.

You might have to start by running the recovery DVD.

The factory installation probably leaves a folder on the drive called
"I386". This folder may or may not be "complete" (it's about a 50-50
chance). If it's there, and if it's complete, It can be burned to a CD
and then used to reinstall Windows XP (JUST Windows XP, without any of
the other "junk").

See if you can find the folder (it can be in quite a few locations, try
C:\, C:\Windows and C:\Windows\Options\Cabs first). See if it has both
Winnt.exe and Winnt32.exe, if it has them both it's probably "complete"
(it will be about 400 megabytes, give or take).

The process of using this to do an install is too complex to go into
here and depends to some degree on the system and what software you
have. A "computer expert" can do it, most end-users will not be able to
without extensive help.
