I upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro. Now my system does NOT
work!! I need help to fix it..

As I was installing Windows XP Pro when I got two error messages.

1) the first one stated that the "VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM)"
has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibliity with Windows
XP" and that continuing with the installation might create serious problems

2) the second error stated that "The file 'viaide.sys' on (Unknown) is
needed" ... Type the path where the file is located and then click OK.

After Windows XP Pro completed installing, when the system finished
re-booting the system ended up with a blue screen with the folllowing

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop
error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives
or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive tomake sure it is probably
configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption,
and then restart your computer.

I wouldn't worry about the Audio Controller not passing the Windows Logo
testing, but according to what has been posted by the Microsoft Reps in
the Win x64 forum, the '7B' error is due to a problem with your drive
controller driver, "viaide.sys"  Did you have that file on a floppy when
setup was looking for it?

If you have formatted your system to NTFS, you can try doing a "Safe
Mode" boot and uninstalling, or deleting the driver.  The other method
is to boot to the Recovery Console and delete the driver.

If your file system is FAT32, you can use a Win 98 or Me boot disk and
then find 'viaide.sys' and delete it.

Get the via drivers onto a cdr.  Boot the problem system into safe mode if
possible by pressing  F8 just after the POST.  Log onto your account and
install the drivers.  See if the system will now boot normally.

Or preferably.

Do an AV scan in safe mode and then backup your stuff to cd/dvd if possible.
When you're sure you have everything saved, wipe the drive and perform a
clean install of XP Pro.

Yep, I'd give the 10 points for the clean install answer.
Bet it'll save weeks & months of other problems.
