- My DVD-RW drive stuck in PIO mode.....
January 13, 2007, 7:29 pm
rate this thread
+R at 16x, and DVD +RW media at 8X. Well, the write speeds were way
down, and it read/verifies the data at 1.5 x! It took over an hour to
write and verify a DVD+R! And the PC is paralyzed when DVD read or
write operations are going on. I checked on the IDE secondary channel
and disk 1 (the DVD-RW drive) had "PIO only" selected... and was in
PIO mode. NO wonder. SO I changed to "PIO mode if available" and
rebooted. However, even though the preference is set for DMA mode now,
on reboot it did not switch, it was still set to PIO mode. SO I shut
down the PC again and disconnected the IDE cable and power to the
DVD-RW drive, and booted into Windows (XP SP-2) again. Then I shut
down again, re-connected the drive, & re-booted. However its still
stuck in PIO mode. THe secondary Disk 0 device, a master hard drive
on the secondary channel is working OK in UDMA 5 mode.
I don't know what else I could try except to swap in a new IDE
Re: My DVD-RW drive stuck in PIO mode.....
Win will put it into PIO mode when there is a significant error rate
to the drive. You need to manually reset that when you have replaced
what is causing that significant error rate, usually the cable.
the reset is the WORKAROUND section.
You do need to swap the cable, and manually reset Win too as described.
