So there are the Maxtor 150GB 16MB cache 7200rpm HDDs, right? Well, there's
an IDE and a SATA version listed at my parts store. I know that SATA doesn't
offer that much gain over IDE, but the SATA version is only AUD10 more...is
it worth the few extra dollars to get the SATA version?

Who said the difference in performance is small? If half again speed
gains are small, then I don't know what you're looking for.
If your motherboard natively supports the SATA drive, by all means,
Don't us an slot controller card however. The bus can't run as fast
as the drive. In any event, don't go below and ATA-133 Maxtor.
