I plan to upgrade my Asus A7NX8-X and XP 3000.  I will buy an XP 3200
/DDR 400, and so I would like opinion of what is the best motherboard
(and fastest) to use with it. I would like to run 1 mb RAM in
dual-channel mode.   Has to be AGP video. I'm talking the very fastest
Athlon motherboard ever produced.  I have a Radeon X850 XT on the way,
will be used in present system until I the upgrade mobo
has to be AGP also.    THanks, Geronimo

Don't bother, it'll be a waste of time even if free parts.

nForce2 chipset, which is what you already have.  There are
other boards with more integrated features, but performance
differences on what yours already supports will be minimal,
not worth changing a board.

There is no reasonable upgrade for what you want to do,
enjoy the X850 and when it's time to upgrade again you will
need to abandon socket A.  If you want best performance for
this AGP video card, go with a socket 754 Athlon platform.
If you can get your money back from the video card seller, I
would get a PCI Express video card instead and PCI Express
motherboard and supported CPU.

A guy just yesterday, bought a 3200+ Barton AthlonXP for $160.
He could have had an Athlon64 S939 3200+ Venice from Newegg for
$59. There are S939 AGP motherboards out there.

Venice 3200+ $59

S939 AGP motherboards $61 - $67

So it looks like, for somewhere around $126, you can get a processor
and motherboard to match or exceed your existing platform.

If you are looking for an A7N8X-E Deluxe (S462) or similar, they'll
likely only be found on Ebay.

Re: Fastest /best mobo for Athlon XP 3200?

Wow....going this route.....Athlon 64/ S939 mobo..... would cost HALF
of what I was considering! I thought that all the Athlon 64 boards
only supported PCI Express video.

But is there a site that has benchmark comparisons between say the
Athlon XP 3200/Asus A7n8x-E DLX route I was considering and Athlon 64
3200/ low-end S939 AGP mobos you referenced? I am thinking your Athlon
64 would smoke the older technology....question is by what factor?
Thanks, Geronimo

If there is any doubt in your mind, there are faster S939 processors
than the 3200+ (2.0GHz 512KB L2 cache).

There is an FX-55 for $209 (2.6GHz 1MB L2 cache). (By comparison,
the 4000+ is 2.4GHz 1MB L2 cache.)

There is even an FX-57 for $289 (2.8GHz 1MB L2 cache).

There is a 3800+ Venice single core for $89 (2.4GHz 512KB L2 cache)

There is a chart on this page, comparing game performance. -->

Basically, each 200MHz step of clock, is worth 300+ on the
P.R. scale, and changing 512KB cache to 1MB cache, is worth
200+ on the P.R. scale.

That would be the ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe (or similar)
or the Abit AN7.
Both excellent high performance motherboards.

However, I'm not sure I'd bother.
you could probably over clock your current CPU the small amount needed to
reach XP3200 speeds.

For the money you would spend on the s/hand CPU and Board, you could buy a
faster brand new CPU and board.

If you do go the Socket A route, stay away from the ASUS A7V880, just in
case you were ever even considering it.
