External HD Not Recognized

Threaded View

I have one of those external hard drives that connects to a USB port.
This drive has worked just fine in the past. But, when I connected it
today, Windows Explorer does not see the drive. Device manager does
see the drive and reports that it is working properly.

I have tried power down and up with no luck.

I seem to remember something about a last drive setting that may be
the problem. Maybe that setting is somehow excluding the external
drive from being seen by Windows? I forget how to change the setting.

Any help will be appreciated, jimbo

Does Disk Management show a valid partition and filesystem?
Does Event Viewer show any seemingly related error messages?

You might run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics on it, but
if it holds any valuable data you might take it out of the
external enclosure and install in a system to directly
access it, just in case it's failing it would be good to use
what time it has remaining (if any) to copy off data.

Re: External HD Not Recognized

Thanks for your reply. I found that I had last used the drive for
backing up some Linux partitions. Sooooo, the drive was recognized by
the system, but Windows doesn't recognize Linux partitions.

Since I wanted to use it for Windows this time, I used Paragon to
reformat the drive FAT32, and everything works OK.
