- Computer possessed during startup

would come on, HDD LED goes on for a bit, optical drives light up for their
check, but NO POST beep(s), and then nothing (on screen). Keep trying,
nothing. Turn off, come back some other time, turn on, and everything works
fine. Seems not to work more often than actually working. Pulled everything
apart, cleaned MB, cards, tried MB, vid card, 1 stick mem, cpu and cooler,
and it seemed to work. Put system back together, worked. Went to try it this
morning, same problem returns.
So, question is, would changing CMOS battery/resetting CMOS do anything?
Seems to me like it might be some bad connection on the MB somewhere, and
depending on ambient temp, might be causing the problems. Sound reasonable?
If so, guess the only solution is new MB? Or it could be power supply or vid
card? Running a fairly new Thermaltake.
ASUS A7V is the current board. ATI Radeon 9600 for vid card.
Re: Computer possessed during startup
That isnt a very useful test unless it always works in
that config and mostly doesnt with everything loaded.
Yeah, those intermittents can be a pain to diagnose.
Very unlikely to produce that success after a delay effect.
Yep, and could well be a warmup fault too, mostly boots
fine when started from cold, often doesnt once its warmed
up, but usually does after you let it cool down again.
Could be any of those. Best to see what happens with
no video card, see if it fails to reboot once it warms up.
It will obviously beep whining about no video card, but
that is still different to no beep at all.
Cheaper to try another power supply.
Check for visible bad caps. Those are the usually blue or black
plastic covered post like things that stick up vertically from the
board. The tops should be flat. If any have bulged or have
leaked, its almost certainly the cause of the problem.
It'd be unusual for a warmup fault in the video card
to produce that no beep effect, but it can happen.
