Whether you're looking for an inexpensive computer to get you started
in the build-your-own world, a solid machine for everyday use for you
and your family, or a desktop optimized for many of today's hottest
games, you can build a PC that will do what you want, without spending
a lot of money. Three Computer Shopper editors, with the assistance of
online retailer set out to prove this. They worked within
three different restrictions: a budget system for under $600, a
mainstream machine for under $1,000, and a gaming desktop for under
$1,400. (Peripherals like monitors, mice, keyboards, and speakers were
