Hi, I posted about USB problems when connecting a device to the front port.
I tried to connect an empty USB cable to my new computer while it was
running and it shut the video down. Scared me almost to death. The second
time I tried it re booted. Luckily I was able to boot up and all is well.
Won't do that again. As suggested by somone could this be a static problem?
I've plugged my flash drive in repeatedley with no problem but not again
until I find out what is going on.

Unless the outlet feeding your computer is not grounded, a static issue is
not likely. I would question the USB jack in the PC if it's only one of them
that causes the problem

Static can be a problem whether the computer is grounded or not. Touch bare
metal on or near the computer to discharge static from your body before
inserting a flash drive.

  So what is 'properly grounded'?  The key to understanding static
electric is 'how does current flow' and which 'ground'?  Ground that a
static discharge must connect to is  ground underneath shoes.  Whereas
you may not regard that floor as conductive, static electric currents

  How to make a computer motherboard most robust?  Only one
motherboard ground connection to chassis ground - best located nearest
peripheral and where power supply connects.  Now any static electric
currents on the chassis do not pass through the motherboard ground.
Mounting a motherboard with connections to the chassis at both ends of
the motherboard means static discharge currents can flow through a
motherboard ground and crash the computer.

  Same applies to a static discharge on USB cables.  Does the current
flow across the motherboard ground or via other conductors?  If yes,
then the computer will crash - or worse, be harmed.

  Follow the current.  Tests to learn this can be conducted with
leather slippers on a nylon carpet while the computer is on a glass
tabletop.  Why glass?  Even formica and wood are electrical conductors
- will subvert experiments.  Simply static shock different parts of a
machine to learn what discharges crash the OS - cause a reboot.  Then
determine how that current flowed.

  To understand how static electric causes a crash and how to avoid
that easily eliminated crash, simply follow the electric current path
from fingertip to 'ground' beneath that shoe.

  One final point.  There is no one ground.  That receptacle safety
ground is not same as ground beneath shoes. However that safety ground
may connect to ground (the floor) beneath shoes.

  Chassis ground is different from motherboard ground.  Connecting
those two grounds only at a single point is one way to making a
motherboard ground immune from static electric currents flowing in
chassis ground.  Yes, only one conductive standoff.

   Even motherboard ground at opposite ends of that motherboard can be
electrically different.  Which is why all motherboards have bypass
capacitors all over the board.  There is no one ground.

  To understand what is and is not affected by a static electric
discharge, trace its current path.

There was obviously a poorly designed ground to the motherboard, or any
static would have been shunted
