One thing you don't mention here is the question of whether there is any
point in running on the battery if there is a mains socket at hand. My
colleagues will happily flatten the battery while the laptop is within easy
of the mains, which IMHO is plain stupid. Surely it's better to have the
battery trickle charging via the regulator in the laptop rather than go
through a full discharge/charge cycle for no reason.

It can depend a lot on what the bother is worth... by the
time the battery is wearing out one might find a replacement
for $75. Being able to use the laptop without constant
worry about it migth be worth the 37.50 per year if it
lasted 2 years.
