WinXP Pro. 2GB Kingston memory.
When I write to a CD, everything works fine until I try to close
whatever program I was using. Then the computer freezes and I have to
hard shut it down. I've tried using Nero, Easy Media Creator and
Windows Media Player and the same thing happens with all those
programs. I've tried connecting the drive to different IDE channels.
I've tried a different drive. I've tested both drives in other
computers and they work fine. The drives are a Sony and a Plextor,
both relatively new. The CDs come out fine.
I can't think of anything else to try. The computer works perfectly
in every other way as far as I can tell. Any help would be greatly

It really sounds like some program is preventing the completion such as
an anti virus scan, but if you have disable such programs and it still
fails, I would go to "plan B". Have you done a thorough test of your
RAM and HD?? I have seen cases where a bad location in memory (remember
the HD is used for virtual memory) would not come into play until a
large task (such as handling a full CD of data) utilizes the location.
Defraging the HD would also be wise if you have not done it recently.
