OT? MP3 CD Players

A friend of mine has a CD player that will play a data disc full of
MP3s.  It apparently has no problem with searching subdirectories for
appropriate files, and ripping ID information from those files when
they're played.

Is there any sort of standard format that these players are looking for
on the discs?  For instance, is there any way to indicate Title and
Artist fields for the entire disc in some sort of config file at the top
level?  Or as another instance, if there is no ID information will it
look to the folder structure for Artist and Album information?

most of the time the data is embedded in the mp3, it's part of the
standard, on my old one i'd just toss all the files in the root and it'd
play with the correct titles n all.

The Sony Psyc player does have some recognition of the folder structure
on the disc -- apparently it creates a group named after the folder for
any level of the hierarchy that immediately contains *.mp3 files.  You
can select groups much like a playlist.  It also will parse *.m3u
playlists and allow you to navigate them.

It's not exactly like having a 20Gb MP3 player, but it's pretty cool
that I can get all of The Smashing Pumpkin's catalog on one playable
disc.  Thanks for your thoughts made earlier.
