Microphone Levels

I've been having some problems using a microphone in my Windows 7 64-bit
system.  The front panel port is fine--the microphone has reasonable
levels for recording.

The back panel port, though, has very low levels.  I've checked the
settings for both ports and they are set to the same "volume" and boost.
If I crank the volume and boost all the way up, I can get some
reaction, but the recording sounds crappy.

I'm using the most recent driver from my motherboard manufacturer.

This appears to be a mechanical problem. One of the contacts
in the rear panel socket is not making contact with your
plug or the motherboard.
