You might also try to start the task manager (control-alt-delete) while
the delay is happening and see what process is using the most processor
Other things that might cause this could can be a totally fragmented
drive, partially bad RAM with a lowering total memory available,
indexing gone wild, anti-virus program kicking in and doing a complete
drive scan, bad CPU cooling fan or plugged cooling fins on same, etc.
At this point it's too early to really tell until you do a little more
