A friend of mine, who is just trying to get acquainted with his computer,
managed to get all the XP desktop icons into the left upper quarter of the
screen so that they are now very small and hardly readable. How to fix this?
(I tried Control +, but it didn't work.) He (and I) would be grateful for a
repair to normal.

The size of Desktop icons can be restored to WinXP default by
/ start / control panel / display / Desktop / Customize / Restore Default
and can be customized via
/ start / control panel / display / Appearance / Advanced / Item set to
