Brand new locally made machine. Of course, this locally owned, reputable and
highly recommended dealer isn't open at 10:00 on Saturday nights. :-)

Software: Nero version
Burner: Lite-ON DVDRW model SHR-160P6S

I figured my first attempt at cooking a CD should involve copying a
store-bought disc. Resulted in the cryptic error message "Power calibration
error". Please pile on the theories. I have a new bottle of aspirin.  :-(

PS: Willing to spend actual money on better software, if necessary.

The information may work but it sounds uncomfortably time consuming each
time you want to record, even if it works. You do have the latest Version 6
Nero, and the only thought I can render is that the Lite-on is a newer model
that is not covered under the older version of Nero (Nero 7 has now been out
for about 5 months) and it's completely possible that there's something that
should have adjusted by the newer software.
Win XP also has basic burning software and I believe you should be able
to at least copy some files with it to see if it's rudimentarily running.
However, since you apparently have it new and the dealer is reputable then
you should be able to get it ironed out quickly.
