I recently was given an 8 port HP cat5 kvm.   What is the maximum distance I
can use for the cat5(if less than 300meters)

I honestly have no idea about it but I'm fairly sure that if you look on
HP's website you will find a manual that you can download that will tell
you. Not having the model number myself, it would be much more difficult
for me to find the information.

CAT-5 is rated to 100M
CAT-5e is rated to 350M
CAT-6 and CAT6e is rated to 550M or 1000M depending on your source
CAT-7 is supposedly rated to 700M or presumably 1000M

I would not depend on those numbers in this case -- they assume standard
Ethernet protocol communications over the given cable type. In the case of
the KVM there is no requirement that the designers use the CAT5 cable in a
standard way. In fact we can can assume that they didn't since carrying
video, audio, keyboard, mouse, and USB signals is nor their usual task and
in the KVM that is exactly what they are being used for. CAT5 cables were
likely chosen for use because they are cheap and every data center has a
large number of them conveniently lying about, unlike the usual proprietary
KVM cable sets. Far safer to let the maker tell you what the distance
limits might be.
