I need to have a reliable backup for about 30 GB that must be retrievable
after ten years.

What is the best medium for this purpose? I read that hard drives can
develop problems if they are stored for more than a few years. Is this true?

All media can. And another question you need to consider is if there's
going to be anything that can read the media in the future.

FWIW: I work on antique computers
and thuough a harddrive can of course die without warning...
I have plenty of harddrives here that are ten - twenty years old and still
work fine.

I'd test the drive once  a year or so...
or even copy it to a new drive in 5 years or so

also as a precaution I think I'd burn the data to DVD's too
