My 2.5 hard drive connected via USB2.0 suddenly stopped working; a message
appeared saying something like "initialization problem."  With this failed
hard drive connected via USB2.0, Windows XP does not even boot.  However, if
the drive is not connected, then Windows XP starts all right.  Then when the
drive is connected, it is recognized (there is the "connection sound") but
the drive is not shown on "My Computer."  Is there a way to fix the drive?

I don't know what is causing the problem. If no one comes up with a better
answer I would try deleting the drive's partition and then recreate it and
reformat it. It's possible that its mbr could be corrupted.

Gee Jan, how are you supposed to do that if the drive doesn't show up in
Windows? It's a USB laptop drive remember, he can't just plug it onto his
IDE cable either (without an adapter).

Frank, too hard to say. First try it in another USB port, then on another
PC. Than maybe I'd try installing the drive *in* the PC on the IDE cable
using an adapter and see what happens.
