Hi,

I want to buy an external hard drive for my laptop, which brand or
model would be most reliable? Each brand/model seems to get reviews
that trash it. I want 150 to 300 gigs.

Thanks

These come in many different capacities and are very reasonable (don't pay
retail!)

just buy your favorite brand's regular harddrive, and an external case...
ie: I have a Seagate Barracuda 120GB drive that I just put into a
USB/Fireware case (less than $40 at any decent computer store) and voila.

Are you going to be doing complete back-ups (imaging the drive) or just
using it for external storage? If it's the former, get the same
interface as is in your laptop (PATA or S-ATA) so you can swap drives if
necessary.

Are you going to want to power it from the laptop or is external power okay?

Do you want a notebook drive (small) or desktop drive (big but less
expensive/GB)?

For a P-ATA notebook drive in that capacity, get the Seagate Momentus
5400.3 ST9160821A 160GB for $120 and
"http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=103022".

For a S-ATA notebook drive, get the
Western Digital WD1600BEVS, and
"http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=103057"

For desktop drives, I like the multiple interface USB/Ethernet
enclosures. It's often really nice to be able to plug the external drive
into your network, rather than into the laptop (and of course you can
also plug it into your notebook either on USB or Ethernet but you may
need a crossover cable for Ethernet). You can get 500GB for under $200.
Look at Newegg for "LACIE 300951U".

Actually I saw that Costco has the WD 160GB Passport notebook drive,
already in a USB enclosure, for $120.

For a notebook size drive, this is about the best deal I've seen.
