FFS, how long does it take to 're-synch a database', whatever that means.

What does that mean anyway?....Re-syncing the database?.....Am I being
stupid, or does anyone else think this sounds like they threw together a
couple of words that they think sound technical?

It probably means they have a duplicate of the database offline
somewhere, and are synchronizing the two. It used to be a lot more
common, but there are still a lot of companies which do it - mainly
large ones.

For instance - XYZ Sales might do web sales as a small portion of their
business. In fact, they may only have some of their inventory online.
Their main database is located on an internal server, protected by a
firewall, etc. Products are added and removed from the main (internal)
database, while both databases have transactions associated with them.
Resyncing the databases involved updating both databases with the
changes from the other. At the end, they should be identical. Similar
to an incremental backup - except both sides can change. During this
process, the database is generally locked to prevent changes during the
resync process.

One interesting use I worked on a few years back was a company which
furnished each salesman with a laptop. The laptop had a copy of the
product line database. When the salesman visited a customer (a salesman
might visit 8-12 customers a day on the average), he just put the order
into his laptop. At the end of the day, he synchronized his laptop with
the main database via phone line. That uploaded his orders and
downloaded changes to the product line for the next day.

It's more complicated than a backup/restore. But it shouldn't take more
than a few minutes (unless they haven't resynced for a while and the
database is huge).
