I sync'ed my Samsung i730 Friday morning, using a functioning Mobile 2003
YH25a and Active Sync 4.1 over a USB 2.0 cable between a notebookcomputer's
USB port direct to the cradle. Then I updated to Windows Mobile 5.0, using
Verizon Wireless' WM5.0 download and the same AS4.1; no errors in updating
the phone's firmware were reported. (I'm on XP Pro and Office XP Pro, both
SP-2 with all updates.) When I first tried to sync, I was told that "i730",
the name I called my phone, was another PC, so AS could not sync. I changed
the name of the phone to XXXX. Then AS reports it is syncing Calendar, Tasks
and Contacts (but no data is transferred into the phone), AS gives support
code: 01x85010014, plus a red ! is displayed on its green sync button. The
phone's status screen gives the date of my last Mobile 2003 sync for "i730)
and shows the "XXXX" sync as having a problem. Any help appreciated.

The answer turned out to be: (1) Detected and repaired Outlook, using the
Office CD (or at least I put it into the optical drive in case Microsoft
wanted it; I have no idea whether it was required). Add/Remove Programs and
removed Active Sync 4.1. (2) Restarted the computer. 3. Installed ActiveSync
4.2 Beta. As soon as Active Sync started, it asked me to plug in my
cradle/Samsung i730. Almost immediately, AS 4.2 displayed a screen informing
me that there were two partnerships present. I deleted both of them, of
course. By the way, I found out that it is illegal to name a partnership
using a space character in the name. In other words, 'dog cat" is illegal;
dog_cat or dog-cat are legal. Evidently, this naming situation was allowed
in AS 3.8.1 and maybe in AS 4.1 but the editor in 4.2 Beta catches it.
Everything sync'ed just fine with AS 4.2 beta. What fixed it, detect/repair
Outlook or AS 4.2 beta? Don't know and don't care. However, when I restarted
my PC this morning and started up Outlook, it restarted really, really
slowly. Despite what Chris De Herrera has written in his pocketPC website,
the problem is strictly one of system integration testing between Office 2003
SP-2 and AS 4.1; I don't care which program needs to have its code changed.
