is there a program I can use to compress WMC recorded shows into MPG or a
more workable format before I make a backup Data Dvd? Also, is there any way
I can expect to get 4-6 hours of shows on a disc that will play in a DVD
player? I'd like to get WMC files into a format that I can play on a computer
without WMC, even if I can't compress the files; I've got access to magic
iso, dvd shrink, dvd xcopy platinum, dvd xrescue, Nero 7, and typical windows
burning software, but I don't know what's good for what.

I've had good luck with Crunchie, which extracts the MPG from the DVR-MS
then transcodes it to DivX AVI. The resulting video took about half the
space with no visible loss in quality. Look in the Download section at
www.MediaCenterStuff.com.

Depending on the burning software, you may be offered other compression
options that could further shrink the file size. You _might_ be able to get
4 hours on a dual-layer disk, and maybe more, but I'm not sure you'd like
the result...

You could also use VideoReDo Plus (www.videoredo.com) to find and delete the
commercials, which can add up to about 20 minutes per 1-hour show, depending
on the channel.
