The Acer Aspire 1700 has two slots and each slot can have a maximum of 512MB
each. So the 1GB won't work. You need another 512MB if that second slot is
open.

im sure your right as its not working but i founf this aswell
Memory Upgrade for Acer Aspire 1700 Series, the Acer Aspire 1700
Series takes the PC2100/2700 DDR SDRAM DIMMs Memory Type, and comes
installed with 256 MB or 512 MB (removable) of Memory. You can upgrade
your Acer Aspire 1700 Series to up to a maximum of 2.0 GB Memory, the
system has 2 sockets to install Memory, already with 256 MB or 512 MB
(removable) standard Memory installed. For best system performance use
the maximum amount of allowed Memory per slot for your system.
Choose the following Memory Upgrade for Acer Aspire 1700 Series.

Weird. Kingston says only 512MB x2 max.
