Hi,

I need to digitize/vectorize a street network from a scanned raster in
ArcGIS, I have some queries regarding the way I should mark road
centerline polylines so that it stays topologically correct and can be
used by a routing algorithm.

1) what rules govern creation of an entirely new polyline object or
just adding points when there is an intersection with 'another'
link/street. I mean if you have 'abc road' which is a spans a distance
of 200 metres, but is contributed to by some minor streets at 3-4
places from both the left and right side it. Should I create seperate
polyline objects, all called abc roads...? ( I hope I'm not being
rather vague..) I understand that my problem is not unique and there
must be some resource on the net which can explain the process with
some real examples?

2) what is the best way to store attribute information such as
direction of flow of traffic (if the road is 2 way or one way..) should
different layers be used for this or the same layer with attribute data
attached to it?

I've been referring to GDF specification and trying to get a hang of
how 'real' road networks work..but I will be glad if i am pointed to
some more resources on this.

Thanks
Suraj

Yes.

Look at http://www.routeware.dk/routedata.php for a few pointers.

Store attribute along with the basic polyline. If you have an attribute that
is only true for instance in very few situations, you can also choose to
store a list of ID's referring back to the polyline network.

Direction of flow is typically stored as 0 for 2-way, 1 for flow only in
direction of digitization and 2 for flow only in reverse direction.

Kind regards

Routeware is a very good place to start. Read, Read, Read.
After that, read everything yu can find on ESRI.
