I was thinking the same thing; I have my own dial-up ISP so can I configure
my smartphone to use its modem and my dial-up account to provide internet
access for the phone and/or a computer connected via USB?
I called up Cingular to see if I could get some info on this idea, and after
a 30 minute chat with the tech, which involved a lot of beating around the
bush and technical explanation, he said that there is no way to use our own
ISP with the phone and not get charged for "Data Transfer" per kb by
Cingular. I asked why, if I supplied my own dial-up account, why I couldn't
just get charged for minutes while dialing up to the internet, and he said
if we were transferring data, the network would recognize it as such, and
charge us accordingly.
In conclusion, the data plan I'm looking at is $20/month and includes 200
text messages and UNLIMITED internet. That means for the phone itself and
for use as a modem for your laptop! Not a bad deal, so that's what I'll be
doing. I have heard about ways of making your own access point on your home
server with certain networks, but that would take a lot of Googling and time
to implement such a system. If you got more time than money, I suggest this
route, however, for only $20 a month, Cingular offers a decent alternative.
