that friends of theirs have received spam from a faked address
(firstname.lastname@example.org, or maybe email@example.com, became
firstname.lastname@example.org) that contained text from e-mail that they (the two I
heard from) wrote four or five years ago.
Sounds like a hard-drive intrusion -- I would have heard about this if
Yahoo or AOL had been victimized, I assume.
Very, very scary -- can anyone shed any light?

Probably a virus on one of the machines that has a copy of the email
that hunts for emails (or other documents) it can use when it sends
itself out in the hopes of making the sent copies look more like valid
Living in interesting times.
Although my email address says spam, it is real and I read it.
