By paying for the program, of course.
If your goal is to circumvent license terms of software someone took
the time to write and that you find valuable, I'm hoping you won't
find help here.
On a more academic level, registration and copy protection schemes in
programs vary widely, so the question you've asked isn't even
answerable in a general fashion, even if someone wanted to assist you
in your goal.

What happened was this: I d/l-ed a mpg-joiner program, free for 7
days, then... life happened... days passed and I didnt get to use the
thing even once. So it's not as if I'm trying to 'abuse the
privilege'... that I never partook of to start with.

So, you have no idea what the shareware installed. The safer way is
to wipe the hard disk, and install everything from scratch. That way,
you also get rid of the spyware you installed. Of course, the author
of the shareware could be tracking the IP address _range_ of systems
that downloaded the program, in which case you have to either buy
the software, or visit a different news group to get the answer. You
are posting from a search engine - have you tried looking there? I'm
sure they have a lot of more appropriate newsgroups. The server I'm
seeing your post on has LOTS of that kind of newsgroup:
[compton ~]$ grep -c warez .newsrc
[compton ~]$ grep -c crack .newsrc
Be sure to virus scan anything you download.
