I am connecting to open wi fi hotspots and would like to do online
banking and buying from this connection.  I can log onto my financial
online service providers, but do not know whether there is
"readability" when in SSL secure mode with a website.  It is said that
anyone can see data from a non encrypted WLAN, but when internet
explorer is in secure mode with the padlock in the toolbar is it safe
to pass CC info to a vendor and is it safe to do online banking and
bill paying? TIA for any responses, Larry

Yes.  When you're connecting to an SSL web site, everything is encrypted
by the browser and server.
