Audio and video from my VHS tape deck play in the preview window when I
select Composite video or 'none of the above' in the "select a TV working
Signal" window. But when I try to record it, MCE goes to 'channel 2" by
default. Toshiba support solved this for me once; they said we 'fooled' MCE
into thinking that the video input was coming from a TV channel, and I was
able to record the analog video & audio with no problem. But I had to do a
system restore after a video card problem, and now I have the problem again,
and Toshiba can't seem to find the guy who fixed it for me before. I don't
have or need TV input, so there's no other cable attached except the
composite cable from the VCR. I don't have S-video out on the VCR, so I
can't try that. Thanks for helping.

I'm kinda in the same boat, but I'm trying to figure out how to select the
Composite video when I run my set-up, I'm using Vista on an HP m7750n, with
a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600 card in it. Where are the options for composite
is my question, the HP "support" is pretty useless about this.

You have to tell MC in TV setup that you are using a STB and importing from
composite and not from either the analog or digital tuner on your 1600
card.. You then tell it watch LiveTV and start feeding the composite from
the VHS.
Or if your VHS also has a coax output so it can go direct to a TV then you
can set it to output on channel 3 or 4 whichever is a real channel in your
area and then watch Live TV on that channel. by connecting the VHS coax to
the Cable/antenna NTSC tuner connection on your 1600 card.

I'm suffering from this problem using Vista Home Premium and an HDTV Wonder,
trying to import from a VCR composite feed to the Dongle adaptor. When you
select the Satellite or Cable option for setup instead of Antenna, setup
REQUIRES an IR blaster to change channels. Setup fails if you don't the
blaster. Any way around having a IR Blaster?

Thanks

No. The rationale is that MCE is not designed to hook up a VHS deck for
capturring tapes but is
designed to hook up & connect to a Set Top box (cable, satellite etc). The IR
receiver/blaster combo
is required to control the external STB. Just buy the remote/remote receiver &
IR blaster package it
is cheap enough.
