Greetings - most of the regulars in this group seem to advise people not to
use Outlook Express, but are there any views on MS's replacement Windows
Live Mail (initially called Windows Live Mail Desktop - i.e. nothing to do
with Hotmail).

As long as you don't use an insecure browser, such as IE to access it,
and trust M$ with access to all of your email, it should be fine.

MS or anyone else is quite free to read my email, it's pretty boring
stuff, mostly because I'm a pretty boring type of person, but even if
that were not the case everyone knows confidential information should
not be sent via email.

Not everyone!
Some send their private information encrypted
with PGP or GnuPG.

Well yes, encryption is an option if you must transmit sensitive
information by email.

David, kindly please elaborate. I don't need to *access* WLM via a browser
and thought it is an independent application which I open by a WLM shortcut.
My two (2) browser applications (can) remain closed while using WLM.

My mistake.  I was thinking about the webmail access.  Checking the Secunia site,
http://secunia.com , they have no advisories for Windows Live Mail, unlike IE 7,
which still has 7 out of 21 advisories, unpatched, as shown at
http://secunia.com/product/12366 /

It appears no problems have been found with it yet, however, I personally do not
trust M$, to provide secure software.  Whenever a suitable alternative exists, I
advise staying away, from M$ Crapware.  I find gmail, with a pop3 mail reader,
works quite well.

while WLM maybe be an actual email client rather than a website you
access using IE, consider how WLM is going to render your HTML emails...
it's basically a forgone conclusion that they will use the same HTML
rendering engine as IE (it's actually a re-usable component that any
software developer can use) to render HTML content in your emails...

which means it will be more or less the same as using IE...

Depends on how you configure WLM.
