What can I use in place of AVG 8.5?

AVG 9.0 absolutely refuses to install on my laptop.
Something about a conflict with MS C++ which I don't have
and can't seem to get and so have given up.

Since I no longer wish to waste sweat on AVG 9.0, can
someone recommend a different anti malware program that will
run in the background and provide me a level of protection.
I already have MalwareBytes AM, and SpybotSD, which I run
weekly.  Also have Zone Alarm, Windows Defender and
Spyblaster.  I would like to have something to fill the hole
that AVG 8.5 will leave when I can no longer update the
definitions.

Thanks.

Windows XP home on a Compaq laptop.

PS.  AVG 9.0 runs smoothly on my desktop after I ignored
dire warnings about Threatfire, or some such thing.  I just
ignored it because it was not on my machine either.  Go
figger.

Thanks

I had good results switching from AVG to Avast.

One more question.  Avast! is up and running but I'm not
ssure how to update the definitions.  Are they automatically
updated periodically and before a requested scan, or how
does that work?  Thanks.

Avast automatically updates at least once a day.......and if you want to
update it now, right click on the icon by the clock and you will see where
to do so.  For a requested scan, I would manually update it to make sure you
have the latest defs.

True if you have it set for automatic updates; Right click the icon > Program
Settings > Update (Basic) and select "Automatic" radio buttons for both
database and program.

Avast provides for a boot-time scan also which is handy for scanning the
computer before any programs (or malware) are loaded.  Search for "boot time"
in the Help (F1) topics for details.

While the usual suspects have not replied (the good guys, that is), many
regard Avira Free Edition to be the best for a free AV (AV only)
solution.  I agree with those folks.  But mine is a single vote.  I
suppose I could recruit ACORN to inflate that number, but does Mickey
Mouse actually use a PC?  ;-))

httx://www.free-av.com/ (edit and correct link to use, x->p)

I also use the free Avira.  While there is a daily nag screen to
purchase a full copy, that can be remedied.  Google for Avira Nag Screen.

There is no reason to have to obfuscate either of those URLs.

I did it as I am not a known member of the experts but wanted to help.
I will consider it acceptable from now on to use the direct links to
known, vendor-provided (or discovered) links.

Yes.

If it bad or possibly bad, please do obfuscate the URL.

You could use the recently released Microsoft Security Essentials.  I've
been trying it out for a few weeks on a couple of computers and it does
seem to be pretty good and it doesn't get in the way.  It has also had a
lot of positive press.  Better still, it's free but doesn't appear to be
only for personal use, which is a big advantage over using free AVG or
Avast.

Same issue - I couldn't  find the upgrade - it just kept pointing me
to paid versions.  Eventually I downloaded 9.0 (45 Minutes !!!), then
uninstalled 8.5.

9.0 refused to install - didn't say why - just said it couldn't.
Rebooted the machine -hit Setup - couldn't find the 'Files.dat' file
(which doesn't exist).  Gave up - I am not going through a 45 minute
download again, life's too short.

Downloaded Avast (3 minutes), installed fine -  all appears to be OK.

You may want to look at SecureIT, its now a free download.  I use the
paid version through my ISP., and in a year, never had a problem.
