I mentioned Defender as an addition to, not a "backup" for,a AV.
For a backup, BitDefender offers a free,installable,on-demand scanner.
I use David Lipman's Multi_AV tool as a backup scanner(s).
For single file scan I use

Kaspersky seems to be following suit, unfortunately.

It seems to me that all of them will/are becoming bloatware. With the
sheer numbers of new nasties, is there any other way?

Soon the only real answer is going to be:  abandon Microsoftware.

Not all. NOD32 has managed to remain as it was, even with version 3.x.
I find that most of the bloat is in the interface of the afore
mentioned products.

I choose to use NOD32. It's detection rate is decent while providing a
uncluttered interface and minimal resource usage.

The freebie version of Avast.   Been using it for several years,
no problems.

I would dis-recommend Trend Micro's PC-Cillin   Used it for a
year or so and found it dysfunctional with no meaningful support.

In fact, the support was worse than none.  With none, one doesn't
waste the several man-hours needed to discover that all they're
getting is inane boilerplate in email replies.

OTOH the place where I do most of my work uses something from
Trend Micro.... maybe they give better support to corporate
users.

Would recommend not relying on anti-virus software in the first place. That,
however, doesn't answer your question. Look for a product that updates
itself frequently without manual intervention and has a very low false
positive metric. High detection rate is a no brainer but needs to be
balanced against other factors. Look for a product that has the option to
scan only modified or new files.

Joe, would you mind giving some good recommendations.  Your experience with
these would be valuable to us.

No more than anyone else's.

My experience is probably not relevant. The latest versions of NAV and ESET
would fall into this description. There are probably other, reputable
products. av-comparatives.org is one good source for information.

Good judgment is far more reliable than good AV software.
