Hi All,

If you are using McAfee VirusScan 10, do not Upgrade to VirusScan 11 as
instead of improving the product, McAfee has added functions to VirusScan
that affects your normal Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 loading of
your Startup ICONS. Most of the Startup ICONS do not appear.

disable the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host. To do this, open Administrative Tools in Control Panel, and
then open Services. Select "SSDP Discovery Service", right-click it and
select Properties. Change the startup type to "Disabled" and then click OK.
Repeat this for the "Universal Plug and Play Device Host."

Open "My Network Places" and in the left-hand Tasks panel, select
"Hide icons for networked uPnP devices". (If you're using Windows Classic
folders you'll have to change the Folder Options to "Show common tasks in
folders" to see this. This stops the display of the icons but does not
disable the services needed for some devices to work.

check VS to start in boot

Re: WARNING - McAfee VirusScan 11 & Startup ICONS

Hi PeaceKeeper (Tony),

No, not a Dell Computer, but a Custom-built Computer.

AXPER XP-P41533PE Motherboard, D-Link DWL-G520 Wireless Card and ATI
All-in-Wonder 2006 AGP Graphics Card and also Intel Celeron-D2.93 GHz and 2
GB of Physical Memory installed.

Oh, I don't need to open Administative Tools for Services, as I have
Services Pin to Start Menu. So all I do, is hit Start then Services.

    I have:
Plug and Play                                            Set to Manual.
SSDP Discovery Service                          Set to Manual.
Universal Plug and Play Device Host         Set to Automatic.

I have devices plugged into my USB Ports that start at Bootup.

Services settings to display Startup Icons for McAfee Services.

McAfee E-mail Proxy   Set to Manual
McAfee HackerWatch Service       Set to Automatic
McAfee Log Manager   Set to Automatic
McAfee Network Agent   Set to Disabled
McAfee Personal Firewall Service Set to Automatic
McAfee Protection Manager  Set to Manual
McAfee Real-time Scanner  Set to Automatic
McAfee Redirector Service  Set to Disabled
McAfee Scanner    Set to Manual
McAfee SystemGuards   Set to Manual
McAfee Task Scheduler   Set to Automatic
McAfee Update Manager   Set to Automatic
McAfee User Manager   Set to Manual

13 Services in all.

P.S. - Was banned by then Site Administrator / Forum Administrator Brett
R. for contradicting him back in 2004. I have not been restored to the
boards.

P.S,S. Man of two faces. One Computer is really fast 2.93 GHz above and
one is my original Compaq Presario 5714 with still original Motherboard and
processor of 466 MHz / 66 Bus speed. :)

This is not a fault of VirusScan 11, so much as a long-standing bug in
Windows XP that has been exposed on your computer by something
VirusScan does. There are numerous articles about the problem, which
has been around since XP itself came out, such as this one:
http://www.tech-pro.net/howto_013.html .

Re: WARNING - McAfee VirusScan 11 & Startup ICONS

Hi jm,

I have seen that page before.

Plug and Play    Set to Manual
SSDP Discovery Service   Set to Manual
Universal Plug and Play Device Host Set to Automatic

I turned on all McAfee Services back to Automatic, 13 in all.

With the above settings I only get 6 Startup Icons. When I log off my
User ID without restarting the computer and log back on, I get 13 Startup
Icons.

But using the settings below I get all 13 Icons at Boot.

McAfee E-mail Proxy   Set to Manual
McAfee HackerWatch Service       Set to Automatic
McAfee Log Manager   Set to Automatic
McAfee Network Agent   Set to Disabled
McAfee Personal Firewall Service Set to Automatic
McAfee Protection Manager  Set to Manual
McAfee Real-time Scanner  Set to Automatic
McAfee Redirector Service  Set to Disabled
McAfee Scanner    Set to Manual
McAfee SystemGuards   Set to Manual
McAfee Task Scheduler   Set to Automatic
McAfee Update Manager   Set to Automatic
McAfee User Manager   Set to Manual

Oh, if I disable SSDP Discovery Service, SVchost.exe consumes a lot of
CPU and hangs the system. And I can't disable Universal Plug and Play,
because I have USB Devices plugged into USB Ports.

Universal Plug and Play is not required by USB devices, as far as I
know. It, and the SSDP Discovery Service, are only required if you want
to use plug and play devices on networks.

But the point is, stopping these services only eases the problem. There
seems to be a bug in XP that blocks the creation of system tray icons
while services are initializing. If McAfee is starting 13 services it
is bound to cause a problem. Most of the people who have this trouble
end up having to use a software like Startup Organizer (
http://www.tech-pro.net/startup-organizer.html ) which can delay the
launch of the programs that create the icons so that they do not get
blocked by the services.

Re: WARNING - McAfee VirusScan 11 & Startup ICONS

What you are saying may be true. But some people don't have extra money
to spend for other programs. So, having time on my hands, I have
experiemented with what I have and learned and given freely my knowledge.
