Virus Scan -when positive- disconnects the internet.

I don't much care for virus protection to run memory-resident, so I
have been testing out some standalone and command-line scannners..

A few times, while testing the eicar file and a keylogger that I have
stored on my hard drive, the respective virus scanner beeps for a
positive result, and simultaneously it seems, the internet
disconnects.  This occurence doesn't allow me the convenience of
continuing my work on the internet. I can't quite figure if it's winxp
or the scanner software itself forcing a reboot to restore my net
connection...

Nothing resident that would cause this that I can figure.. I'm using
Winxp, a buffalo router, and a SBC dsl modem...

Any help?

Ah winxp. That only remains for you to describe "scanner software" a
bit and the non-clairvoyant can join in too.
