update problems

Hello, everyone

I have been having problems with the family desktop for quite some time
now.  the main problem seems to be ad,spyware of some kind, although i
could be wrong on that.

The main symptom is that every now and again the browser would be
redirected away from say, a sports article to a xxx site without any
input from the user.

I have tried a myriad of antivirus tools to get rid of the problem
including, avg, clamwin, spybot, and a couple others and none seem to
work

The main problem it seems is that none of these tools can update their
virus databases or in some cases download them at all.  I am fairly
certain that this stems from the browser redirect that was mentioned
earlier although that is little more than speculation.

I have even tried to update avg manually by downloading the update file
in safe mode and updating from the directory but still no dice.

If anyone can help in anyway it would be greatly appreciated as i am
about to pull my hair out over this.
