Trojan Horse Agent Amaw

A friend of mine has this on his computer. AVG detects it and heals
it, but upon reboot, it is there again. The main symptom is a lot of
pop ups, even with pop up blocker on. What can we do to get rid of
this? I am trying to avoid reformatting, unless there is no other
choice.

Thanks,

Peter

You could try MalWareBytes free AntiMalware. Go to their homepage, dl the
free AntiMalware, install it, update it, delete all your temp files and temp
internet files and then run the program.
You cound also try one of the many online anti-virus programs.
Another very good free program is SuperAntiSpyware.

Thanks. We'll give it a try. I like to think that AVG has all that
covered, but that's probably not realistic.

Totally unrealistic, it doesnt seem like any of the anti virus products can
keep up with the sheer volume of new spyware.

I understand what you are saying. Should I have 2 or 3 anti-virus
programs scanning daily?

Thanks,

Peter

He's talking spyware.
If I were you, I would run the free versions of SuperAntiSpyware and
AntiMalware daily.
I purchased SuperAntiSpyware and use its 'real time protection' feature.
AntiMalware (paid) has the same feature.
No single Anti- (spyware or virus) scanner will find everything.
Practice Safe-Hex :  that's your safest and best bet.

I confirm MalWareBytes free AntiMalware will fix it.
http://www.malwarebytes.org /

I had that Trojan and existing security/spyware programmes never
detected it. By chance I installed MalWareBytes free AntiMalware just to
try it and it found and removed the Trojan on its first scan.

I will. He tried it last night and it said he needed some program; he
couldn't recall the name. I asked him if he downloaded it and he said
he will have his son do it today. So I'll get more details, hopefully
tomorrow.

Thanks

He said he thinks the virus is gone, thanks to malwarebytes. The pop
ups are gone, but AVG does still find it each time he turns on the
computer. I told him to quarantine it if he can't heal it.

Thanks!

Something not quite right there. If your friend chose to delete the
trojan in MalWareBytes it then shouldn't be there for AVG to find.

It is most likely something else.

Suggests a root kit. In addition to Buffalo's advice, I'd suggest a
rootkit reveal/re,oval tool. Google on "rootkit removal".

Good luck.

Don't Google...

Go straight to Gmer.

http://www.gmer.net/index.php

Make sure you close ALL programs and un-needed utilitied before you run a Gmer
scan.
