Trojan

Hi Folks,

I am running AVG Free edition, anti virus on my Windows XP HE machine.
My grandson uses the machine to surf the web and look up information
about automobiles. I keep getting Trojans on the machine that AVG
sometimes identifies but can't clean. Sometimes AVG doesn't even
identify them. When I go to Housecall by Trend Micro, that will
identify and remove them. I can find no information on these trojans
by searching the web. Here are the last three I have found:
TROJ_SE.118079
JAVA_BYTEVER.K
JAVA_BYTEVER.A-1.A

Does anyone have any information as to why AVG can't stop these coming
in? I update on a daily basis.

Thanks

Later,
Malcolm

Malcolm, trojans are usually either installed because you do not have the
system patched with the latest updates or you have File and Printer Shareing
active and do not have secure passwords on the system.

Download HijackThis then install it then run it and post the resulting log
in a support forum:

A good antivirus product will block such known malware, and one of
your problems is that you're not using a good one. Another problem
relates to the fact that two of the malwares are Java types. Don't
have Java enabled all the time in your browser, for one thing. Use it
very selectively. Also, use the latest version of Java.

It's likely you have spyware/adware on the PC as well. Scan with
AdAware, Spybot and Ewido.

I suggest giving the latest Beta of Kaspersky version 6 a try:

It will more than likely keep you and your grandson malware free.

They are Java Trojans.  Either .CLASS files outside or inside Java Jars (ZIP
type files).

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE
Version 5.0.  There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being
exploited.
It is possible that is how you got infected with malware.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun
Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE Version 5.0 Update 6
be installed ASAP.

1)    Dump the contents of your IE cache -
        Start --> settings --> control panel --> Internet options --> delete
files

2)    Dump the contents of the Mozilla FireFox Cache { if you use FireFox }
       Tools --> Options --> Privacy --> Cache --> Clear

3)    Dump the contents of your Sun Java cache -
        Start --> settings --> control panel --> Java applet --> cache --> clear
          or
        Start --> settings --> control panel --> Java applet --> general -->
settings -->
        delete files

For Trojan -- TROJ_SE.118079

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go
through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal
Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the
PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you
can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded
the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode
[F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run
in Safe
Mode.  It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive
PDF help
file.  http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Well I checked which version of Java I have installed and it turns out
I have version 5.0 update 6. My computer is clean as I have run
Housecall from Trend Micro. They cleared the Trojans.

Thanks
