Hi

A friend of mine has been given an old XP PC which was part of a corporate
network.

The PC runs fine but...

It has Trend Micro Client/server installed. Its unable to update and now so
out of date is pretty useless.

Ive tried uninstalling it but each time get a password prompt for the
uninstall to go ahead. Of course no one knows the password!

Ive tried restarting in safe mode and logging in as Administrator hoping
that might be a workaround but as expected still get the prompt.

Ive tried several password recovery utilities but none of them found any
(incidently most up to date security software will intercept these utilities
but this Trend didnt which shows how out of date it is!)

Is there any way to remove this without the pw?

Of course until Trend is removed we cant install a new Internet Security
Suite.

Thanks for any info.

Ian

Simply deleting the files is an option. If they "resist", delete the extension,
reboot (if
needed) and then delete the files.

I'm not a legal expert, but I don't think that your friend has a proper
license to use Win XP on that computer.

When you get a computer like this, for a variety of reasons, it's best
to repartition, reformat and install an operating system for which you
have a license.

If your friend is still working for the company that owned that license,
it's okay for him to use XP on that computer. Otherwise, he'll have to
get his own XP license to stay legal.

In addition to the questionable legality of that situation, there are
other reasons to want to wipe the HD and start over: viruses and worms
could be on it; the company that owned it may have put employee
monitoring software on it; embarrassing or illegal data may be on that
computer, and substantial hardware changes will cause the O/S to go
through Windows Activation again, and your friend doesn't have the
license key data from the installation disk's package.

Indeed, he might not have any XP installation disks, so installing some
drivers and services might be difficult.

If it were me, I'd wipe it and install Linux :-)

In fact, this did happen to me. A guy gave me a Pentium 300 with Win98
on it, and I wiped it and installed Debian Etch.

However, people who are new to Linux are advised to go with an easier
and more Windows-like distribution such as Kubuntu.

Re: Trend Client/Server on PC now used as standalone. Unable to uninstall without password - any way to do it?

This will do it for you:

1. Run regedit.exe.

2. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\PC-cillinNTCorp\CurrentVersion\Misc.

3. Double-click the "Allow Uninstall" key.

4. Set the value to 1.

5. Save the changes made.

I had the same exact problem and this solved it.  Post and let us know how
you made out.

In addition to the change suggested by WK above I had to set the
following key also:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\PC-cillinNTCorp\CurrentVersion
\Misc.
NoPwdProtect = 1
