The Bogeyman Window

Without going into a long description of my issue, allow me to raise the
following question:

Has anyone encountered the popping up of a 2" x 5" white rectangular window
in the middle of the screen with a CLOSE
button at the base. If one tries to ignore it, then one finds that mail and
internet access are kaput. If one clicks on CLOSE,then the best one can do
is to click on start and to reboot.

Thank you.

David,
I don't know how. However my description of that bogeyman rectangle is 100%
accurate.
It appears intermittently and began about a month ago after I tried to
remove AVG7 because it no
longer supported my OS of WinMe. I installed AVAST which is a memory hog. I
seemed not to be able to remove all of AVG so I contacted the company which
sent me a removal tool in this email.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your e-mail.

We are ready to help you with solving any issues with AVG 8 and we
would welcome your cooperation in order to find the cause of the
reported issue.

We are sorry for the inconvenient. Kindly download the AVG service
utility from the location below to your computer (we recommend saving
it to your Desktop) and run it. Detailed information will be displayed
on your screen:

This file will remove completely all AVG 7.x registry information.

If you are still having any issue on AVG product, kindly contact us

Yes I did and got this reply. I wrote back and asked, "Wouldn't it be easier
if I just deleted everything in the registry that
has the words AVG or AVG7?"

Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for your email.

In case AVG 7.5 is not completely removed by our utility, please do as
follows:

Download Sysinternals' Process Explorer, create a shortcut that you
can then add to your Startup folder. When you reboot, reduce the size
of the Process Explorer window and drag the Find Windows Process
gun-sight icon from the toolbar onto the notification window you
mentioned and release it. Process Explorer will (might?) highlight in
blue the process that owns it. Perhaps that will enable you to
identify its origin and disable it from starting up (using
Sysinternals' AutoRuns). Also check what's selected for your desktop
background.

Without a UBCD4Win CD to use to restore a system restore point, I
think you're only solution is to try a repair install. If that fails,
a fresh install would be your only solution. I would take it to a tech
who can mount your drive as a slave and back up your data first. That
tech should have UBCD4Win, and might be able to fix it.

Good luck!

Here is the latest I sent to AVG7. Maybe it can help you and others come up
with a solution.

Gentlemen,
When the crippling rectangular window appears and I click on close, I get
four error messages which paralyze the use of my mail client as well as
Internet access using Mozilla. This problem, once again, occurred only AFTER
I first tried to remove AVG7.5 from my computer, The 4 error messages are as
follows:

"1. Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to
create the spooler object. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk
is full. Contact Microsoft for further assistance. (0x800700E)
2. Outlook Express could not be started because another instance of it is
still running on your computer. Please log off Windows and then start OE. If
the problem persists, save your work and then restart your computer
3. Mozilla--there is not enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or
more programs and then try again.
4. OE could not find MSOE.dll which has not been initialized."

Sirs, I reiterate that I had none of these problems until I tried to
uninstall AVG7. Your advice, please.
Thank you.
