A friend picked up this from a website.   It hijacks her browser and placed
a little icon in the system tray.
I saw this about 1 year ago, Im upset that symantec NAV and windows defender
were unable to stop it.
Is there a known malware that is recent and does this>  Im sorry I dont have
the details yet as I have that PC offline and will probably just format and
reload

Do you know which website? What does the systray icon look like, and if
you hover over it, is there a descriptive tooltip? What other symptom
makes you think it is a virus or malware, as in my experience, those
things tend *not* to announce themselves.

Run some better anti-malware applications.

At this stage - especially since you don't know if it really is malware
- format and reinstall is juuust a bit of overkill.

More likely an update to her browser, or an add-on that she allowed when
she installed something else.

Anyhow, without further info, it's impossible to help you.

BTW, all systray totems are started at boot, so you should be ale to
prevent it from starting by using a utility that lets you modify the
start-up list.

However, some nasty rootkits can do the same thing.

Carl:

BTS gave you good links for antii malware removers.

However, you really haven't supplied much information.  What little icon in the
system
tray.  Does indicate show anything or text ?
How does it hiJack the browser.  What are the sysmptoms.

As for Windows Defender and NAV.  It could very well be something new any
neither have
detections for it and NAV is very bad at non-viral malware but in general NAV is
just bad.

If I may make a suggestion before you take the reformat/reload/hunt down
all drivers/tweak box/reload software route... Why don't you give these
programs a try:
