Threaded View

I am trying to get the smitfraud popups off an xp pro machine, went to safe
mode and ran the fix.
 http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php

on reboot it was still popping up [in browser along with other ads (each in
their own browser) , did not have the traditional system popup for smitfraud
that I have seen before ] , internet access is shakey, cannot download AV
updates

have run aaw2008 wo updates found lots of troj downloaders, deleted
supposedly. PC still slow on bootup, Also ran AVG 7.5 wo updates. Popup
browser ads still come up with main feature something like super master
antispyware needed on your sys [not exact wording or descrip, master key
word] -- IE6 browser crashes freq. Can get one page usually google.com.
Machine has 8 users in family of girls. They have MySpace running as a
process.

Any suggestions, this one has me stumped. Any appreciated.

Try Spyware Terminator and SuperAntiSpyware (both freeware).  You can
install ST in SAFE mode (not sure about SAS).

Warning about spyware is old - this is a very good program
      2007-06-19 00:27:36

At Spyware Warrior quite a while back this program was listed as under
Rogue/Suspect Anti-apyware programs then that site delisted it admitting it
was no longer even adware - perhaps a couple of years ago it included a
toolbar also made by the company Crawler. This download has no toolbar.
There is an extra web site advisor program you can optionally download along
with it - I did not get it. For a free program Spyware Terminator is quite
amazing I think - I like best part is its shields it has which complain
whenever new programs are installed, but it is easy to let it allow once or
make a rule to continue to allow this. If spyware was installed it would
stop it for sure is the feeling you get. It also has nice scanning features,
autoupdate, sheduled scans and is fairly easy to use. See user reviews at

I am very impressed with the speed and efficiency of ST, and that I can run
it without having to download anything from a customer's pc. Also, its nice
to have running processes listed and removeable with check boxes right from
the scan panel.

I still can't seem to do an avg 7.5 scan, but originally this pc had Trend
Office Scan a huge behemoth, and Microsoft AV, another ineffecive thing and
then the AntiSpywareMaster. Now it seems I still have one popup called Vista
Antispyware 2008. The crapola has no shame.

Much THX, VicTEK

Thios is not a reputable reference.

The site is an affiliates of SpyHunter, an Enigma software.

The affiliates generate incomplete removal information for adware/spyware to
goad you to
download the so-called free scanner.  It is NOT free.  It may detect but NOT
remove and will
cost $$ to remove the malware.

Enigma is NOT a respectable company and has failed to reign in their affiliates
who spam HJT
Expert Forums and use bad business practices.

It appears there is a new variant out there, I have had at least four PC's
from customers that were real tough,
on some of the computers it seems that the Explorer.exe has been replaced
with an infected one and the system re-infects.
The only way I have been able to rid a PC of the infection is to scan the
drive with another PC, AVG 8 removes the virus files, then reinstall the
hard drive into the original computer, and do a repair install of XP and all
the updates. (because the XP install is now borked). most of the time...

I think I got it, but still too early to tell. It still popups with this
Vista AntiVirus 2008 occasionally, but I haven't seen the antispywaremaster
popup in a while. Seems like Spyware Terminator did most of it. The pc had
about 15 downloader trojans on it that also had to be removed. I can now
download pages off the internet without interruption. The pc had 3 different
antivirus products on it, these merely served to slow things down. Now I
left only Spyware Terminator on it. The best way is of course to scan it
with another pc. I don't usually have the setup necessary for that.

If you get "...popups with this Vista AntiVirus 2008 occasionally" then you are
likely STILL
infected.
