None of them. Keep away from suites. Choose a good anti virus, choose a good
firewall, and in case of infection choose a good antispyware.

1) good antivirus:
Avira, AVG, Avast

2) Good Firewall:
XP sp2 firewall is sufficient, especially if you are behind a router, the xp
firewall is easily compromised however, so make sure your system is clean.

3) Good antispyware
Malwarebytes, superantispyware

If you want to use a suite I would recommend Norton Internet Security 2009.
This latest version is dramatically improved.  I would not recommend any
previous version and I would also stay away from Norton 360.

Others recommend using separate resident Firewall, Antivirus and Antispyware
applications.  I don't know that this is necessarily better, but it
definitely involves more maintenance and may cost more depending on your
choices.  Whichever way you go I would recommend having additional "on
demand" antispyware applications.  MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spybot S&D
are good choices.

Is there a similar guide like this geared toward the home network, to
make it a little easier to understand and implement?

Don't know.
Though the 'Laws' as described in the paper look pretty straight forward to
me and AFAIC apply to 'all' environments.
