Replacement for AVG

I've been using AVG for well over 10 years without any problems, but have
had to completely uninstall and reinstall a couple of times over the past
few months due to it failing to update and now I find my computer locking up
frequently and always in the middle of an AVG update.  I've been thinking of
switching to Avast, but also have Norton Security Suite available for free
through Comcast.  Norton used to be fairly bloated but I've heard it's
improved over the past few years.  Comments on which would be a better
alternative?

I also heard Norton is much berrer now. (faster and easer on system
resources) I use Avira here, and will keep on with it.

I would never, never, never install a "security" suite from Norton (nor
from McAfee).
I could get McAfee (suite) for free from my provider,
but I decided not to do so and keep my computer safe and sound.
(the provider is now looking for a different offer.)

I prefer Avira Antivir (Free):

There are some complaints about the "commercial" of Avira,
but that can be suppressed by applying one of these solutions:
http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm

On the other hand, I hear good reports of the latest Avast (free):

I've been using avast! for years (4.x, 5.x and now 6.x) now without any
problem. Avast scans in realtime on different levels (e-mail, http, p2p,
...) and it doesn't hog all the memory.

Ah.

I went with Avira many years ago and my yearly subscription is just about
up. I'll be shopping around soon again. Can Avast be setup to scan on-demand
via a control file?

IE:
--- cut here
 "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avscan.exe"
/CFG="C:\windows\inboundscan.avp" /PATH="C:\data_dt\Soupgate\soup\"

All this does is scan that directory's files via a Avira control file, works
slick. BTW.. it's incoming MINE files.

I'm not sure since this is a function I don't use. Maybe you can look
for an answer (or ask a question) on their webforum:

If I'm not mistaken you can post there without having to register first.

Don't get too attached to it; this combo won't work under Vi$ta or W7.

This tip might be useful to you then. As is presently, the Intel Core
i3,i5,and i7 processors although labeled as 64bit; are not 64bit only
processors. You can load a 32bit edition of windows XP on them. You can
still (as of a few days ago) find chipsets. I posted specs for an okay
system in alt.politics.scorched-earth... as well, everything is on topic
there. It's uptodate and will run windows XP. Just an FYI if you didn't
already know this stuff.

That's good to know, I haven't researched CPU's in quite some time.

I'm just slow to upgrade to ANOTHER MS OS. Lets see, I bought win286,
win386, w95, w98, 3.1 and XP. Friends don't let friends drive Vista.
