Recent spam

I've noticed an exponential increase in spam in several newsgroups over
the last week or so. In most of them, the rate has decreased. In some,
including this one, it's gone up even more.

Fergawdssake, people, don't answer these &$%#$#%4 posts. It just
encourages the spammers.

Bah!

I never answer &$%#$#%4 posts,
hardly ever respond to the &$%#$#%4 people that mention them,
only making an exception in your case,
because you seem like such a nice &$%#$#%4.

I've seen none here, using 40tude Dialog on news.individual. Doesn't
Thunderbird allow you to filter out spam? I wouldn't call Thunderbird a
true newsreader anyway. Keep it for mail.

Roy

I don't get any spam at all through Datemas.de. They filter it out at
source. Blame it on your Usenet provider for not doing anything about it
rather than the people who do see it for answering the posts. The spammers
won't be reading the answers anyway.

You'll get far less spam by simply filtering all postings here via gougle
groups. The source of much mischief.

Thanks for the laugh.  Yeah, like spammers actually go back to the
newsgroups to check on replies.  Yeah, like spammers themselves even
visit the newsgroups.  I suspect the real purpose of your post is to
compensate for inadequate filtering or a weak newsreader on your end.
That is, you've managed to filter out most of the spam but not any
replies to it.  Get a better newsreader.  As I recall, Thunderbird will
not ignore entire subthreads, just individual posts.

If you respond to a spam post, it should be to warn other users about
something regarding the spam/scam/phish.  If you are going to report the
spammer in an attempt to get their account killed, don't bother warning
them about it -- just do it (same goes for killfiling).

I noticed it for about two minutes, then added the Message-IDs to my
score file, in 40tude Dialog. Other competent newsreaders use similar
syntax.

[*]  # For all groups
!delete Message-ID usenetnow.com
!delete Message-ID usenetmonster.com

..and poof, it was gone. You need a better newsreader.

The spammers will never return to read replies. Never.

I'm not referring to response-posts on a NG, I'm referring to the people
who respond by opening the spam and clicking on a link, etc. The spam is
generated by bots, and the responses are monitored by bots. It seems
that in some groups there are a few people who are tempted by the
possibility of getting something for almost nothing... The fact that the
same spam showed up on several groups I subscribe to, and disappeared on
most of them pretty quickly, IMO means that on this group someone not
only opened a spam, but clicked on a link. The bot noticed, and
generated more spam for this group.

That's my suspicion, anyhow. Your speculations may vary. ;-)

As for 40tude, I tried it, and found its interface to quirky for my
taste. I prefer the 3-pane layout, and the increased power of 40tude and
other more competent newsreaders isn't worth the hassle of trying to
figure out the interface.

cheers,

Normally, I would agree with you about the spammers keeping track
which messages got clicks. And this spammer might have, but due
to the way the spammer was getting the accounts, I doubt the
tracking would be very meaningful. The spammer was using an
exploit that would be quickly closed off. Those accounts wouldn't
be around long. So the spammer was just trying to get as many
messages as he could as quickly as possible.

Newsgroup spam by bots. Web site hits by web host stats. Apples.

You are confusing newsreader use with browser use.

Your browser will not ever tell a web site that a clicked link was in a
newsgroup post, much less which group.

And they do!

You need to take two minutes and explore. Here in my 40tude Dialog, I am
looking at the traditional three-pane layout. Groups on left, headers at
right-top, bodies at right-bottom.

There are choices at Settings > Layout > Windows layout
Pick the second in the top row, and the first in the bottom row.

Don't reject something after only a minute's worth of looking.

I'm trying 40tude right now. Its pretty neat. I look forward to
experimenting with the scoring.

Only downside is 40tude doesn't play nice with Win7, but theres an easy
work around.

You should post what the workaround is, for the benefit of others who
still use Windows.  <g>

You can either run the program as an administrator, which is a pain if you
plan on using the program a lot. Or you can just install it outside
/Program Files directory, which seems to be preferable.

Re: Recent spam

Ah, ok. I've seen that said about several different kinds of programs. I
wouldn't really consider that a "doesn't play nice" as it's probably the
same with Vista. Thanks for reporting.

Well, when I initially installed it none of my settings would stay and I
couldn't update the group list. So it doesn't play nice.

Re: Recent spam

Alfred Matej wrote:

Not to belabor the point, but if it works ok when not in Program Files,
then I would say it is a Windows issue, rather than a Dialog issue. And
of course it works with Win2K and XP just as expected.

PING: Beauregard T. Shagnasty

Hey,
Since you converted me over to 40tude, I was curious if you could give me a
look at your scoring rules.

Alfred Matej wrote:

Have you looked at the Samples yet?  Go to Scoring and Actions, and
click the Samples tab.

My general section contains the following bits (no, I'm not going to
publish the whole thing <g>):

[*]  # The [*] means applies to all groups
# Sample of multiple scoring:

# Highlight your own posts  setcolor(<foreground;background)
!setcolor(default;$ccffff) From "Beauregard T. Shagnasty"
# Watch, and download your own posts
!watch From: "Beauregard T. Shagnasty"
# Pick a colour to highlight GG posts
!setcolor(default;$c0ffc0) Message-ID +googlegroups
# Mark them as read and don't download bodies, but they can
# still be seen by pressing Control-F1 (toggle Control-F2)
!markread Message-ID googlegroups.com
# usenetnow.com is the camera spammer
!markread Message-ID usenetnow.com
!markread Message-ID usenetmonster.com

!markread Xpost %>3

!watch Subject "40tude"
!watch Subject "Dialog"
